Understanding what golf irons do and how to use them is a great
way to lower your handicap. Sometimes beginners simply think that
golf is as simple as pulling any old club from the bag and hacking
away at the grass. While pro golfers sometimes make golf look
much easier than it really is, even average golfers know the importance
of being able to choose the right kind of club.
There are a few different weights of irons. There are different
classifications because each weight of iron is capable of doing
something a little different than its predecessor. For example,
if you want to get more loft on the ball (you want to get distance),
a five iron is probably a good choice.
As the numbers of the irons decrease, the amount of loft you
get from using them also decreases. This means that if you were
to use a three iron, you should not expect as much loft as you
would get with a five iron.
Conversely, as the numbers of the irons increase, the distance
the ball will travel decreases. So if you want to hit the ball
farther, you would do well to choose a three iron instead of a
five iron.
It can take a while to get an idea about which iron is best for
the situation which you are in. Experience is the best teacher
in this case. In general terms, however, you should expect for
each level of iron to go about 10-15 yards farther than the previous.
This means that a shot from your four iron should go about 10-15
yards longer than a shot from the five iron. Likewise, a shot
from your three iron should travel about 10-15 yards farther than
a shot from your four iron.
The only way you can really get a great feel for how golf irons
work and in which situations they perform best is to practice.
